Nathaniel Bentley. The well known Dirty Dick, 1821. Creator: R Page
Nathaniel Bentley. The well known Dirty Dick, 1821. Portrait of Nathaniel Bentley (c1735-1809) who had a hardware shop and warehouse on Leadenhall Street in the City of London. After his fiancee died on the eve of their wedding, he allowed the premises to decay into squalor, and refused to wash himself. He may have been an inspiration for the character of Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens " Great Expectations". His nickname Dirty Dick gave rise to the name of the famous Leadenhall Street tavern on the same site. From " Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation", Vol. I, by Henry Wilson. [J. Robins and Co. Albion Press, London, 1821]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intriguing figure of Nathaniel Bentley, famously known as Dirty Dick. Created by R Page in 1821, this portrait depicts Bentley, a man who once owned a hardware shop and warehouse on Leadenhall Street in the City of London. However, tragedy struck Bentley's life when his fiancée passed away on the eve of their wedding. Consumed by grief, he allowed his business premises to fall into disrepair and refused to maintain personal hygiene. This peculiar behavior earned him the nickname Dirty Dick. Interestingly, there is speculation that Bentley may have inspired Charles Dickens' iconic character Miss Havisham from "Great Expectations". The image portrays a man with a melancholic expression, hinting at his deep depression and mental anguish. The notoriety surrounding Dirty Dick led to the establishment of an infamous tavern bearing his name on Leadenhall Street. This engraving was featured in Henry Wilson's book "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation" published in 1821. Through this monochrome profile view, we catch a glimpse into the life of Nathaniel Bentley - a man whose tragic loss left an indelible mark on both himself and London's history.
