Middleton Place,
EDITORS COMMENTS
located at 4300 Ashley River Road in Charleston, Dorchester County, South Carolina, is a historic plantation house and garden that dates back to the 18th century. The house, originally a 1755 guest quarters, was converted into the family residence after the original house was burned in 1865. The estate is named after Henry Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who first planted gardens on the property in 1791. In this stunning photograph taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1928, we see the beautiful and tranquil scene of "Middleton Place." The house, shrouded in the dappled shade of towering trees and draped in Spanish moss, sits majestically on the riverbank. The gardens, which were restored by John Julius Pringle Smith, a Middleton descendant, and Heningham Ellett (Mrs. J. Pringle Smith) in the 1920s, are in full bloom, with various plants and trees adorning the landscape. The image captures the essence of the southern plantation life in the 1920s, with its lush greenery, serene water, and the graceful elegance of the historic house. The Tillandsia usneoides, commonly known as Spanish moss, adds a unique texture to the scene, making it a true representation of the natural beauty of the Carolinas. This photograph is a testament to the rich history and heritage of "Middleton Place," which continues to be a popular tourist destination and a source of inspiration for garden enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
