Merino ram, lately exhibited at Dresden, 1865. Creator: Pearson

Merino ram, lately exhibited at Dresden, 1865. 'The modem "golden fleece" is said to be in Saxony, and [this] ram, which was sold for a large sum at the recent Dresden Show to one of the largest breeders of fine wool in Silesia, wore it to some purpose. He was the property of Mr. Adolph Heiger, of Lentewitz...and was exhibited along with nineteen others, also bred by that gentleman. They gained several prizes, as well as an extra gold medal, given by the Government. The largest ram is said to have weighed 192 lb., and the largest ewe 125 lb., and both would yield from 8 lb. to 9 lb. of clean washed wool. The flock of Mr. Heiger was established, sixty years ago, from sheep imported direct from Spain by the Elector of Saxony. Some of them were exhibited at Battersea in '62, and the official report of the Royal Agricultural Society has these comments on the breed in general: "The French Merinos are valuable for their size and mutton, as well as their wool, which weighs from 8lb. to 18lb. in the grease...Those from Saxony were not equal in size to the French, though very famous for the quality of their wool, a consideration which had to yield to that of superior form when an umpire was called in to decide between the English and Saxon judges".' From "Illustrated London News", 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Symbol of Excellence: The Merino Ram at Dresden, 1865** In this stunning photograph print, a majestic Merino ram takes center stage, its gleaming fleece a testament to the excellence of Saxony's renowned breed. Recently exhibited at the prestigious Dresden Show in 1865, this magnificent specimen was sold for a handsome sum to one of Silesia's largest wool producers. The proud owner, Mr. Adolph Heiger of Lentewitz, showcased his prized ram alongside nineteen others from his esteemed flock. The Merino rams on display were no strangers to accolades; they garnered multiple prizes and an extra gold medal awarded by the Government for their exceptional quality. One notable individual was said to weigh a whopping 192 pounds, while its ewe counterpart tipped the scales at 125 pounds - both yielding impressive amounts of clean washed wool. The Heiger flock's roots date back sixty years, when sheep were imported directly from Spain by the Elector of Saxony. In fact, some members of this esteemed breed had previously been exhibited at Battersea in 1862, earning praise for their size and mutton as well as their renowned fleece. The official report from the Royal Agricultural Society noted that while French Merinos excelled in terms of size and wool production (up to 18 pounds), Saxony's own Merino sheep were celebrated for the exceptional quality of their wool - a distinction that ultimately won out when judges deliberated between English and Saxon experts. This photograph, taken by Pearson, offers a rare glimpse into the world of high-stakes agricultural exhibitions in mid-19th century Europe. It is a testament to the enduring allure of these magnificent creatures and the passion with which breeders like Mr. Heiger strive for excellence in their craft.
