Mercedes 35 hp motor car, 1901

Mercedes 35 hp motor car, 1901. Designed by Wilhelm Maybach and manufactured by the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft of Cannstatt, Germany, these cars marked a great leap forward in design, and were very successful in early motor racing events. The Mercedes name arose when Emil Jellinek, an Austrian-born businessman, ordered 36 cars from Daimler in 1900. He stipulated two conditions; that he be the sole agent in Austria-Hungary, France and America, and that the cars be given the name Mercedes, after his daughter. He himself had used the name as a pseudonym when entering motor races. The name caught on, and the company began to use it for all their cars, registering it as a trademark in 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Mercedes 35 hp motor car from 1901, a true masterpiece of automotive design. Crafted by Wilhelm Maybach and manufactured by the esteemed Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in Cannstatt, Germany, these cars revolutionized the industry with their innovative features. Notably, they achieved remarkable success in early motor racing events. Interestingly, the name "Mercedes" originated from Emil Jellinek, an enterprising Austrian-born businessman. In 1900, Jellinek placed an order for 36 cars from Daimler under two conditions: he would become the exclusive agent for Austria-Hungary, France, and America; and that these exceptional vehicles be named after his beloved daughter Mercedes. It is worth mentioning that Jellinek himself had adopted this moniker as a pseudonym during his participation in thrilling motor races. The name "Mercedes" quickly gained popularity among enthusiasts and soon became synonymous with excellence in automobile manufacturing. Consequently, Daimler decided to use it as their trademark for all future models starting in 1902. This photograph not only captures a significant moment in automotive history but also reflects the passion and dedication of individuals like Emil Jellinek and Wilhelm Maybach who played pivotal roles in shaping the legacy of Mercedes-Benz. As we admire this vintage image today, we are reminded of how far we have come since those early days of motoring while appreciating the timeless elegance embodied by this classic vehicle.
