Mary Robinson (1757-1800), English poet and novelist, 1830. Robinson was also known for her role as Perdita (heroine of Shakespeares A Winters Tale) in 1779. It was during this performance that she attracted the notice of the young Prince of Wales, later King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland. Her affair with him ended in 1781, and Perdita Robinson was left to support herself through an annuity granted by the Crown (in return for some letters written by the Prince) in 1783 and through her writings. Today, she is remembered both as the first public mistress of George IV and as a woman writer of the late 18th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Mary Robinson, a remarkable English poet and novelist of the late 18th century. The portrait, captured in 1830 by artist Henry Adlard, beautifully captures her elegance and grace. Mary Robinson's life was filled with both triumphs and hardships. She gained fame not only for her literary talents but also for her role as Perdita in Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale" in 1779. It was during this performance that she caught the eye of the young Prince of Wales, who would later become King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland. Their affair ended in 1781, leaving Mary to support herself through an annuity granted by the Crown in exchange for some letters written by the Prince. Undeterred by these challenges, she continued to write prolifically throughout her life. Today, Mary Robinson is remembered as both the first public mistress of George IV and as a trailblazing woman writer of her time. This portrait serves as a testament to her resilience and talent. Henry Adlard's skillful engraving brings out every detail of Mary Robinson's features, capturing not just her physical beauty but also hinting at the depth within. As we gaze upon this image from another era, we are reminded of the power that literature holds to transcend time and connect us with extraordinary individuals like Mary Robinson.
