Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: finish-turning a 100-pounder, 1862. The gun, being now completely built up, is carried to a lathe for the purpose of being finish-turned, as is shown in our Illustration...This is performed in a portion of a lofty and extensive building, which we were told was formerly used as a foundry for the casting of the old pattern-guns, but has been transformed into two or three large shops, in which are powerful turning-lathes and other machines used in connection with the heavier class of guns. The workman in the Engraving is seen applying a gauge to the part of the gun at which the tool is cutting. This gauging is in order to ascertain that neither more nor less is being turned off than is required, as it is essential that each gun should be the duplicate, both in external and internal dimensions, of one which is retained in the department, and sealed, as a pattern to guide the manufacture of other guns of the same nature'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the manufacture of a 100-pounder Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal in 1862. The gun, now fully constructed, is being meticulously finish-turned on a large lathe. The transformation of this lofty and extensive building, once used as a foundry for old-fashioned guns, into a modern workshop equipped with powerful turning-lathes and other machinery, is evident in the image. The skilled workman in the photograph is seen applying a gauge to the gun, ensuring that the exact dimensions are being maintained. This crucial step is necessary to ensure that each gun is an exact duplicate, both internally and externally, of a sealed pattern gun kept in the department as a guide for the manufacturing process. The precision and attention to detail required in the production of these heavy guns were of the utmost importance to ensure their effectiveness on the battlefield. The Armstrong Gun, with its revolutionary rifled bore and interchangeable parts, revolutionized artillery warfare and set a new standard for gun manufacturing. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricacies of the manufacturing process during a time of significant innovation and progress in military technology.
