Mansi - Chinese Exiles on the Russian Border, 1865-1871
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating collection of 154 black-and-white photographs taken by local photographer V.V. Lanin during the second half of the 1860s and 1870s in the Far East. This remarkable album, a gift to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg from merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region, offers a unique glimpse into the diverse landscapes, cultures, and daily life of the time. Among the collection's many subjects are images of municipal scenes from Blagoveshchensk, Nikolaevsk-na-Amure, and Vladivostok. Lanin's lens captures the essence of these bustling towns, showcasing the architecture, commerce, and people that shaped their identities. However, one particularly poignant series of photographs depicts the lives of Chinese exiles living in destitution along the border. In this image, a group of Mansi men, dressed in tattered clothing and carrying backpacks, are seen gathered together, their faces etched with the signs of hardship and poverty. Their presence on the Russian border speaks to the complex meeting of frontiers and the challenges faced by those caught in the intersection of different cultures and histories. These photographs serve as an invaluable resource for scholars of anthropology, ethnography, and ethnology, providing a window into the lives of people long past. Their historical significance is further underscored by their oval-shaped format, a common choice for early photographic processes. Together, they offer a poignant reminder of the rich heritage and complexities of the 19th-century Far East.
