EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Louis Antoine de Bougainville, a remarkable figure in French history. Born in 1729, Bougainville was not only a soldier but also an accomplished navigator and mathematician. His intellectual prowess earned him the prestigious title of Fellow of the Royal Society in 1756 while serving as secretary to the French Embassy in London. Bougainville's military career flourished during the Seven Years War, where he served as aide-de-camp to Montcalm in North America. However, his true passion lay in exploration and scientific discovery. In 1764, he colonized the Falkland Islands and went on to lead the first French circumnavigation of the globe from 1766-1769. Accompanied by naturalists and other scientists, this expedition marked a significant milestone for France. As time progressed and revolution swept through France, Bougainville dedicated himself entirely to science. His contributions were so profound that even today we remember him through various namesakes such as the climbing plant "Bougainvillea" and one of the largest islands within Solomon Islands. This portrait engraving captures Bougainville's essence - a man who excelled both intellectually and militarily during a time when exploration was at its peak. It serves as a reminder of his legacy as an explorer, mathematician, scientist, and loyal servant to his country.
