EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lo! he exclaimed, lo Dis!" takes us into the frozen depths of Hell as depicted in Gustave Doré's illustrations for Dante Alighieri's epic poem, "The Divine Comedy". In this particular scene from the first part of the trilogy, called "Inferno" we witness Satan himself trapped in the icy central zone of the Ninth Circle of Hell. Known as Dis according to Virgil, Satan is being punished for his ultimate sin – personal treachery against God. Doré's intricate engraving skillfully brings to life Dante's vivid imagination. The frozen lake surrounding Satan adds a chilling element to this haunting portrayal. As we gaze upon this image, we can almost feel the coldness seeping through our bones. "The Vision of Hell" has been published numerous times since its creation in 1308-1321 by Dante Alighieri. However, it is Doré's late 19th-century edition that truly captures the essence and intensity of Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Gustave Doré was a masterful artist who beautifully translated literature into visual form. His attention to detail and ability to evoke emotions make his illustrations timeless treasures. This particular print serves as a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for redemption and salvation.
