EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1917, captures the elegant interior of the Library in Mrs. Alexander Hamilton Rice's summer residence, Miramar, located in Newport, Rhode Island. The neoclassical mansion was originally designed by Horace Trumbauer in 1902 for George Widener and his wife Eleanor Elkins Widener. Tragically, both George and his son Harry died aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912. Following their deaths, Eleanor married geographer and explorer Alexander H. Rice Jr., and Miramar became their summer home. The Library, filled with books and bookshelves, is a testament to the couple's love for literature and learning. The room is adorned with neoclassical furniture, including ornate chairs, and features a large fireplace, adding to the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The Library of Congress purchased this photograph from Frances Benjamin Johnston as part of its historic American Buildings Survey collection in the 1930s. This image offers a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of the early 20th century American elite and their appreciation for the arts and culture.
