L'Expedition des Dardanelles, Sur la Presqu'île" (The Dardanelles Expedition, On the Peninsula; Sir Ian Hamilton, Commander-in-Chief British, and General Gouraud, 1915) is a striking photograph from the first world war era, taken from L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume I, published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. The image captures two prominent military leaders, Sir Ian Hamilton and General Henri Joseph Étienne Gouraud, standing together on the Gallipoli Peninsula during the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915. Sir Ian Hamilton, a British general, served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the Dardanelles Campaign. He is depicted here in his military uniform, with a stern expression on his face, exuding a sense of determination and resolve. General Gouraud, a French general, played a significant role in the campaign as well, leading the French forces alongside the British. He stands next to Hamilton, also in his military uniform, with a more relaxed posture and a thoughtful expression.
