This print showcases a historical artifact of great significance - a letter from Sir Philip Sidney to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, dated 2nd February 1586. The letter was written by the talented poet, courtier, and soldier while he was stationed in Bergen. In this heartfelt correspondence, Sidney expresses his grievances about the mistreatment he faced at the hands of the Boors of Sommelsdijk. He pleads for either suitable accommodations or necessary provisions to be sent to Bergen. The context surrounding this letter adds even more depth to its importance. At the time of writing, Sidney had been appointed as Governor of Flushing and Colonel of the Zeeland Regiment of Horse. His dedication and burning desire to serve his country shine through in these words.
