EDITORS COMMENTS
Le Roi Pierre Ier de Serbie (King Peter I of Serbia), also known as "Le Roi Libérateur" (The Liberator King), is seen in this photograph visiting his soldiers working on defensive fortifications during the Serbian Campaign of World War I, in October 1915. The image, titled "Le roi Pierre de Serbie, sur le front Nord, visitant ses soldats qui travaillaient à des fortifications de campagne" (King Peter I of Serbia, on the Northern Front, visiting his soldiers working on campaign fortifications), was captured by French photographer R. Marianovitch for the French publication "L'Illustration." The photograph is part of the "Collection de la Guerre IV" (War Collection IV) and was published in the January, February, March, April, May, and June 1916 issue. King Peter I, who ruled from 1903 to 1918, led the Serbian army during the Balkan Wars and later during World War I, earning him the nickname "The Liberator King" for his role in liberating Serbia from foreign rule. In this photograph, he is seen interacting with his soldiers, providing moral support and likely overseeing the progress of their defensive works. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during wartime and the crucial role of their leaders in maintaining their morale and motivation. The photograph's monochrome palette adds to its historical and timeless quality, making it a valuable addition to any collection of World War I imagery.
