Portrait of an...active minister of religion, and advocate of the Temperance or Total Abstinence cause...[He] devoted himself to the editorship of the "Journal of the British and Foreign Temperance Society, " and afterwards undertook other work, both in periodical literature and in lecturing or platform speaking, upon the same subject...During a visit to the United States in the latter months of 1847, Dr. Burns gave temperance addresses in the Faneuil Hall, Boston, at New York, at Oberlin, and in other places in the States...He preached in October, 1853, the inaugural sermon which, under the title of "Drinking and Lawlessness, " was printed and largely circulated, and he has visited the principal towns and villages of England and Scotland in advocacy of the principles of that association'.
