A Lady with Attendant and a Pair of Deer, probably Gujari Ragini of Dipak, from a Pahari Ragamala
A Lady with Attendant and a Pair of Deer, probably Gujari Ragini of Dipak, from a Pahari Ragamala, 1710-20. Half of the heroines body is directed toward her handmaiden playing a stringed instrument known as a vina to her left, and the other half toward the deer at her right. She extends one hand to fondle the male under his chin. All three gaze at her in rapt devotion. Her loose hair and light muslin garment indicate that she has recently bathed outdoors, when she was interrupted by the arrival of the deer. This scene is intended to evoke feelings of awe in the viewer: the heroines beauty is such that even wild animals are drawn to her as a couple. This page is from a series in which each painting is meant to inspire an emotional response that correlates with feelings elicited by musical compositions played in the mode, or key, of the same name

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing painting titled "A Lady with Attendant and a Pair of Deer, probably Gujari Ragini of Dipak, from a Pahari Ragamala". Created between 1710-20 in the Pahari kingdom, possibly Chamba in northern India, this artwork is an exquisite example of opaque watercolor on paper. The composition depicts a graceful lady divided between her handmaiden playing the vina and two deer at her side. With one hand delicately caressing the male deer's chin, she exudes an aura of enchantment that captivates both human and animal alike. Her loose hair and light muslin garment suggest she was interrupted while bathing outdoors by the unexpected arrival of these wild creatures. Intended to evoke awe in its viewers, this scene beautifully portrays how even nature itself is drawn to the heroine's unparalleled beauty. The artist skillfully captures their rapt devotion as all three figures gaze upon her with reverence. Part of a larger series meant to inspire emotional responses correlating with musical compositions played in the same key or mode as each painting's name suggests, this artwork transports us into a world where art and music intertwine harmoniously. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece offers us a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh. Its intricate details and masterful execution make it truly deserving of admiration for generations to come.
