EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, painted between 1710 and 1717 by renowned Swedish artist Michael Dahl (1659-1743), depicts King Karl XII of Sweden, also known as Charles XII, during his reign from 1680 to 1718. The monarch, a member of the House of Wittelsbach, is shown wearing a black coat and jacket, with a golden hilted blade at his side. The somber color palette reflects the austere and serious demeanor of the king, who was a devout Lutheran and a strong advocate for Protestantism in Sweden. King Karl XII is depicted looking away from the viewer, a common convention in portraiture during the Baroque era. He is shown with a determined expression, perhaps reflecting his military prowess and his role as a warrior king. The painting, executed in oil on canvas, is currently housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, and is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the country. Born in the Palatinate Zweibrucken, Michael Dahl was a prolific portrait painter whose works captured the likenesses of many prominent figures of his time. This portrait of King Karl XII is a prime example of Dahl's skill in capturing the essence of his subject, and is a valuable addition to the historical record of Sweden's monarchical past.
