EDITORS COMMENTS
The Judgement of Paris," painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1527, is a captivating oil on wood masterpiece that showcases the intriguing tale from Greek mythology. The painting depicts the moment when Paris, a Trojan prince, is called upon to decide which goddess is the fairest. The four goddesses, Venus, Aphrodite; Athena, Pallas Athene; Hera, Juno; and Minerva, Pallas Athena, each attempt to bribe Paris with enticing offers to secure his favor. Paris is seen standing in the center of the painting, aiming his bow and arrow at a target. Surrounding him are the goddesses, each trying to influence his decision. Venus, represented by Aphrodite, is shown in the foreground, naked and seductively holding an apple, while Hera, as Juno, is clothed and wearing a regal robe, holding an apple in her hand. Athena, or Pallas Athene, is shown in armor, holding a helmet and spear, while Minerva, or Pallas Athena, is also in armor, holding an olive branch. Cupid, the god of love, hovers above Paris, nudging him towards Venus with an arrow. Paris's decision to award the apple to Venus ultimately leads to the Trojan War. The painting is a stunning representation of the power of beauty and desire, and the consequences of making a hasty decision. This masterpiece, created in the 16th century, is a testament to the artistic heritage of Germany and Europe. It is currently housed in the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is a must-see for anyone interested in art, mythology, or the Renaissance period.
