EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of General Sir John Moore, a Scottish-born British soldier who played a significant role in the Battle of Corunna during the Peninsular War. Standing tall and resolute, his commanding presence is evident as he gazes into the distance with determination etched across his face. In this portrait, we witness a true war hero, embodying courage and bravery amidst adversity. As commander of the British forces facing a much larger French army led by Marshal Soult, Moore's strategic retreat allowed for their eventual evacuation by sea. However, it came at great cost - Moore himself was mortally wounded in this fierce battle. The image exudes an air of solemnity and reverence as we contemplate the sacrifice made by this remarkable man. It serves as a poignant reminder of those who fought valiantly to protect their country during one of history's most tumultuous periods – the Napoleonic Wars. Charles Wolfe immortalized Sir John Moore's legacy through his poem "The Burial of Sir John Moore" published years after his death. This engraving beautifully complements that tribute, capturing not only Moore's physical likeness but also conveying an aura of heroism that resonates even today. As we gaze upon this nineteenth-century masterpiece, let us remember General Sir John Moore for his unwavering dedication to duty and honor on the battlefield – forever etching him into our collective memory as an emblematic figure in British military history.
