A Japanese barber - from a sketch by our special artist, 1864. Creator: Unknown
A Japanese barber - from a sketch by our special artist, 1864. 'We present this week another of those characteristic Illustrations of the manners and customs of the Japanese people, with which our Artist and Correspondent at Yokohama has abundantly supplied us. The sketch we have here engraved represents a Japanese barber in the act of dressing the head of one of his patients. He is gathering up the topknot, which is to be tied with an ornamental band, the rest of the crown being scrupulously shaved. The whole operation is tedious enough, but the elderly gentleman whom we see under the barber's hands in this instance has evidently made up his mind to a long sitting, with his legs tucked beneath the low table on which are placed a pair of basins containing the soap-lather and other lavements. The Japanese cutlery is excellent, and there is no fear of a blunt razor in this respectable barber's shop'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the life of a Japanese barber, as sketched by our special artist in 1864. The meticulous attention to detail in this illustration provides a glimpse into the traditional grooming practices of the Japanese people during that time period.
In the image, we see the skilled barber carefully gathering up his client's topknot, preparing to tie it with an ornamental band. The elderly gentleman sits patiently, his legs tucked beneath him as he undergoes this lengthy grooming process. The scene is set with basins containing soap-lather and other tools of the trade placed on a low table nearby.
The description provided alongside the sketch highlights the excellence of Japanese cutlery and assures readers that they are in good hands at this respectable barber shop. It is evident that both the artist and correspondent at Yokohama have captured not only a simple act of grooming but also a cultural tradition deeply rooted in Japanese society.
This print serves as a valuable historical document, offering viewers a window into another time and place where customs and traditions were vastly different from our own. It is truly a fascinating piece that sheds light on the everyday lives of people long gone but not forgotten.
