EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James Gregory, a renowned Scottish mathematician and astronomer. Created by artist William Holl in 1870, the image captures Gregory pointing towards the sky with a reflecting telescope, which he designed and described in his publication Optica Promota back in 1663. This particular telescope was constructed by Robert Hooke. Gregory's contributions to science were significant as he strongly supported Isaac Newton's theories and corresponded with him. The engraving originates from Robert Chambers' A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen published in 1870 by Blackie and Son. The portrait exudes an air of intellect and curiosity as Gregory stands confidently, representing Scotland's rich scientific heritage during the seventeenth century. His occupation as both a mathematician and astronomer is evident through his focused gaze on the celestial sphere. This monochrome photograph beautifully captures the essence of this remarkable man who made substantial advancements in both mathematics and astronomy. It serves as a testament to his dedication to scientific exploration during a time when knowledge was expanding rapidly. As we admire this print, we are reminded of how individuals like James Gregory paved the way for future generations of scientists, leaving an indelible mark on our understanding of the universe.
