The International Exhibition: Pusher lace shawl, by Messrs. Reckless and Hickling, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: Pusher lace shawl, by Messrs. Reckless and Hickling, 1862. The firm of Reckless and Hickling, of Nottingham, one of the oldest and most eminent in the trade, make fancy goods a sort of specialty. The articles we have engraved are selected from a variety of the same class exhibited by this firm at the Great Exhibition, such as laces, flounces, tunics, mantles, shawls, half-shawls, coiffures, and barbes. They are made by the "pusher" machine, with the application of the jacquard, the fabric and pattern being made by the machine and the outline being entirely needlework-run. Being made in one piece, without joins or applique-work, they have an immense advantage over other kinds of machine-made lace, which are made in breadths and joined. These goods, as now made, nearly rival the handmade laces of Cambray, Chantilly, and Bayeux, whilst the difference in price is something wonderful. The designs are all by English artists employed on Messrs. Reckless and Hickling's premises'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the exquisite Pusher lace shawl, created by the renowned Nottingham-based firm of Messrs. Reckless and Hickling in 1862. The International Exhibition of 1862, held in London, showcased a variety of their finest works, including this stunning shawl. The firm, one of the oldest and most esteemed in the trade, was known for its production of intricately designed fancy goods. The Pusher lace shawl is a marvel of innovation and craftsmanship. It was created using the pusher machine, an advanced technology that combined the jacquard system to produce both the fabric and the pattern. The shawl's outline was meticulously hand-embroidered, resulting in a seamless, one-piece design. This method offered several advantages over traditional machine-made laces, which were often made in widths and joined together, leading to visible seams. The designs for the shawls were created by English artists employed directly by Messrs. Reckless and Hickling. The resulting patterns were a testament to the firm's commitment to artistic excellence and their ability to rival the intricacy and beauty of handmade laces from renowned European centers such as Cambray, Chantilly, and Bayeux. The price difference between these machine-made laces and their handmade counterparts was significant, making these exquisite shawls an affordable luxury for many. This photograph offers a glimpse into the innovative world of Messrs. Reckless and Hickling during the Victorian era, a time when the intersection of art, technology, and industry transformed the world of textiles and fashion.
