The International Exhibition: carving in wood, "The Hare and Pheasant", by T. H. Kendall, 1862. The hare and pheasant which we here figure constitute a still-life group...It is by Mr. T. H. Kendall, of Warwick. As a work of imitative carving it is very fine, the plumage of the bird being given with great tenderness and truth, and that rounded character which occurs in groups of feathers, and, indeed, in solitary feathers, is well felt and rendered. The action, or rather want of action, in the game, resulting from passiveness or death, is well contrasted with the rigidity and life of the holly-branch, which is energetic and sparkling. It is altogether a very successful work'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite wood carving, 'The Hare and Pheasant,' by Thomas Henry Kendall, exhibited at the International Exhibition in 1862. The creator of this image remains unknown, but the description from the Illustrated London News provides valuable insight into the artwork's intricacies. The still-life group depicts a hare and a pheasant, both hunted game, arranged against a backdrop of common holly. Kendall's imitative carving skills are evident in the tender and truthful representation of the pheasant's plumage, with its rounded character and the realistic texture of solitary feathers. The hare, seemingly passive or dead, contrasts sharply with the holly branch's rigidity and life, creating a striking juxtaposition. This successful work of art, showcased at the Great London Exposition, is a testament to Kendall's mastery of hand carving. The intricate details in the animals and the holly branch are rendered with great care, making this print a standout piece from the 19th century. The Illustrated London News praised the work for its lifelike depiction of nature and the contrasting textures, making it an essential addition to any collection of historical art or natural history prints.
