EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Tazza, or ornate ceremonial bowl, was designed for the London Art-Union in commemoration of Prince Albert, following his untimely death in 1861. The creator of this masterpiece is unknown, but it was produced under a commission to immortalize the deeds and accomplishments of the beloved prince in the most enduring of materials. At the center of the Tazza, a medallion of Prince Albert is proudly displayed. Surrounding the medallion are guardian angels and geniuses, each bearing tablets that depict views of three significant Albert edifices: the Palace of the Legislature at Westminster, the Osborne Island Palace, and the Palace of Industry of All Nations, which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Tazza's intricate design continues with types of the United Kingdom, emblems of Commerce, Law, and Agriculture, filling the remaining spaces. Within the bowl, the deeds of Albert the Good are represented: Albert as a patron of literature, science, and art; Albert as chancellor of a university, distributing rewards to the Church, Law, and Physic; Albert as a promoter of the united arts, supported by Poetry; and Albert as president of scientific societies, encouraging Philosophy. This work of art serves as a testament to Prince Albert's profound impact on various aspects of society, from literature and science to commerce and industry. The Tazza's intricate design and symbolic representation of Albert's legacy make it a significant piece of Victorian art and a cherished reminder of a prince whose influence continues to be felt to this day.
