Interior of a clochan hut (Sitka island, north coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

This black and white lithograph depicts the interior of a clochan hut on Sitka Island, located on the north coast of America, during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps produced following the circumnavigation voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, this expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of Russian scientific naval surveys in the first half of the 19th century. The interior of the clochan hut showcases the daily life of the indigenous people. A group of boys and girls are gathered around a fire, possibly engaged in cooking or drying fish. The boys are dressed in animal furs, while the girls wear skirts made of bark. The interior is adorned with various household items, including cooking utensils, a drying rack, and a meeting place for the community. This evocative image was created by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, two prominent figures of the Frères Thierry, a renowned publishing house in Saint Petersburg. Their work, which documented the ethnography and ethnology of various regions, was instrumental in the study of anthropology and the preservation of cultural heritage.
