EDITORS COMMENTS
is an evocative and dramatic black and white engraving depicting a pivotal moment during the Spanish Revolution. The image captures the intensity and chaos of the uprising against the Spanish government, with a large crowd gathered in front of the Palace of Queen Christina, brandishing torches and weapons. The palace, once the residence of Queen Maria Christina of Bourbon, Princess of the Two Sicilies and Queen Consort of Ferdinand VII of Spain, is now engulfed in flames, its grandeur reduced to ashes and smoke. The insurrection began on July 17, 1854, with the people of Madrid targeting the houses of obnoxious ministers and the palace of Queen Christina. Although the palace was initially spared during the second attack on July 21, the crowd's anger towards the queen was palpable. The caption from "Illustrated London News" describes the queen as "wicked old Queen," a reflection of the popular sentiment against her. The engraving shows various figures, including men on horseback, soldiers, and civilians, all contributing to the destruction of the palace. The horses rearing and the riders brandishing their weapons add to the sense of urgency and danger. Smoke billows from the windows of the palace, and the flames consume the roof, creating an ominous and ominous scene. This powerful and evocative image is a testament to the tumultuous events of the Spanish Revolution and the role of the press in documenting historical events. The identity of the creator of this engraving remains unknown, but its impact and historical significance are undeniable.
