Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), fol. 284v, Four Doctors of the Church, c
Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), fol. 284v, Four Doctors of the Church, c. 1405. This precious volume was obviously highly prized by its owner, the French-born King of Navarre, who had his coat of arms painted on no less than twenty folios. Rather than directly commissioning this manuscript from a specific workshop, it seems that Charles the Noble acquired his book of hours -- perhaps ready-made for the luxury market -- while on a trip to Paris in 1404-05. A collaborative effort, six painting styles are evidenced within the pages of this codex, those of two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The painter who was responsible for the planning and decoration of the book, and who produced seventeen of the large miniatures, was a Bolognese artist known as the Master of the Brussels Initials. His principal assistant, responsible for most of the borders, was a Florentine who signed his name " Zecho" da Firenze on folio 208 verso

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the "Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre" a remarkable manuscript that dates back to the early 15th century. Owned by the French-born king himself, this volume holds immense historical and artistic significance. The king's coat of arms is proudly displayed on twenty folios, emphasizing his deep appreciation for this precious work. Interestingly, it appears that Charles the Noble acquired this book of hours during a trip to Paris in 1404-05 rather than commissioning it directly from a specific workshop. This suggests that it may have been readily available in the luxury market at that time. The collaboration behind this masterpiece is truly remarkable. Six distinct painting styles are evident throughout its pages, representing two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The primary artist responsible for planning and decorating the book was known as the Master of Brussels Initials—a talented Bolognese painter who created seventeen large miniatures within its pages. Assisting him was another skilled artist named Zecho da Firenze—a Florentine who left his mark by signing his name on folio 208 verso. This print not only captures the exquisite beauty and craftsmanship of this medieval manuscript but also serves as a testament to Charles the Noble's love for art and culture. It stands as an enduring symbol of his refined taste and appreciation for fine works such as these Hours.
