The Hall-i'-th'-Wood, near Bolton, the residence of Samuel Crompton... 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Hall-i'-th'-Wood, near Bolton, the residence of Samuel Crompton, where he invented the spinning-mule, 1862. Remains of many old trees cut down to their roots, and a very few specimens of fine timber still standing, show that the name of the mansion was at one time entirely appropriate...The building is of considerable size, and was erected at two different periods; one portion - the materials being oak timber fancifully arranged, with the interstices filled up with plaster, in the style usually denominated "post and plaster" work - may be as old as the end of the fifteenth century; while a considerable part of the south front and the porch are built of stone. The latter bears the date "1648, " with the initials "A.A.N." This portion was erected by Alexander Norris..."At the present time, " says Gilbert J. French, in his interesting little work "The Life and Times of Samuel Crompton, " "the very success which has attended his invention has covered the Hall-i'-th'-Wood with an almost perpetual veil of coal-smoke, and polluted the clear river with dark stains of dyewoods. Thus one of the most lovely scenes in Lancashire is now rarely to be seen except through a dense and murky atmosphere'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Hall-i'-th'-Wood, near Bolton: A Snapshot into the Past of Samuel Crompton's Inventive Haven, 1862 This evocative photograph captures the enchanting yet melancholic charm of The Hall-i'-th'-Wood, the historic residence of Samuel Crompton, located in Bolton, England. The image reveals a picturesque scene of the mansion, surrounded by a tranquil landscape that once bore the name "wood" due to its dense forest cover. However, the remnants of felled trees and a few remaining specimens of fine timber tell a tale of a bygone era. The building, of considerable size, is a fusion of architectural styles and history. The older portion, built with oak timber and plaster, dates back to the end of the fifteenth century. Its fancifully arranged oak timbers and plaster interstices are a testament to the post and plaster work characteristic of the period. In contrast, the southern front and porch were erected in 1648, as evidenced by the date and initials A.A.N inscribed on the stone. The serene ambiance of The Hall-i'-th'-Wood was, unfortunately, disrupted by the very success that came with Samuel Crompton's invention of the spinning-mule. As recounted by Gilbert J. French in his book 'The Life and Times of Samuel Crompton,' the mansion and its surroundings are now shrouded in almost perpetual coal-smoke, and the once clear river is polluted with dark stains of dyewoods. Thus, the beautiful scene in Lancashire is now rarely seen except through a dense and murky atmosphere.
