EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Peter Adamovich Milevskiy between 1880 and 1889, depicts a significant moment at Gusinoozersk Datsan, the Buddhist monastery and university located in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. The central figure is Khamba Lama, the abbot of the monastery during this period, who is shown holding a 'honkho' in his hands. The honkho is a traditional Buddhist instrument, consisting of a bell and a vachir, which the lama shakes at specific moments during religious services as spells are read. The tranquil expression on the face of the Khamba Lama and the focused gaze of the lama musicians in the background convey a deep sense of spiritual devotion and connection to their faith. At the time this photograph was taken, Irkutsk was the cultural and intellectual hub of Siberia. The city's buildings, including the Museum of Regional Studies, technical schools, orphanages, hotels, and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan, are depicted in other photographs from the same album. The region's natural beauty is also captured in three prints at the end of the album, showcasing the stunning landscapes of the area. The album also includes images of the native Buriat people, who are predominantly Buddhist, and their way of life. The Buriats and their monasteries played a crucial role in preserving Buddhism in Siberia during a time when it was under threat from Russian Orthodox influence. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region and the spiritual practices of its people.
