The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Raising the Ribs of the Transept Roof, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Raising the Ribs of the Transept Roof, 1850. The extraordinary resources of the contractors of the "Crystal Palace" have had no fitter occasion for their display than in the setting up of the massive circular ribs for the roof of the transept. Prince Albert, on his visit last week, specially witnessed, with great and acknowledged interest, the operation of raising and fixing a pair of them. About three quarters of an hour was occupied ere they were securely deposited in their places. Only two now remain of the whole number forming the transept roof to be lifted from the ground; and they will probably, by the end of the week, be in their appropriate seats. So considerably do they over-span the trees, that visitors have remarked to Mr. Paxton, "Ah! after all, you have had to cut the trees"; whereas, not a single branch has been lopped or displaced'. The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park: A Feat of Engineering - Raising the Ribs of the Transept Roof, 1850 This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the construction of the iconic Great Exhibition Building in London's Hyde Park. The image, taken in 1850, shows the raising of the massive circular ribs for the roof of the transept. The operation was a spectacle in itself, with the resources of the contractors of the Crystal Palace put to the test. Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, visited the site and witnessed the raising of a pair of ribs with great interest. The process took approximately three quarters of an hour to complete, and only two ribs remained to be lifted from the ground at the time of the photograph. The ribs span so considerably that they appeared to overshadow the trees, leading some visitors to remark that trees had been cut down. However, not a single branch was lopped or displaced. The Great Exhibition, held in 1851, was a landmark event in the history of the British Empire. The Crystal Palace, designed by Joseph Paxton, was the centerpiece of the exhibition and showcased the latest advancements in science, technology, and industry. The construction of the building was a testament to the engineering prowess of the time, and the raising of the transept roof ribs was a significant milestone in its creation. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the construction of one of the most iconic structures in British history. The image provides a glimpse into the engineering challenges of the time and the innovative solutions that were employed to overcome them. It is a reminder of the ingenuity and determination that shaped the world we live in today.
