The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Circular Cutting Machine, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Circular Cutting Machine, 1850. The timbers to be planed by the machine are placed on the top of a traversing stage, which is moved in either direction by a rack and pinion, the rack being fixed under the whole length of the stage; iron slides, 2 feet apart, are placed on the two longitudinal bearers of the supporting frame, on which the traversing stage moves in either direction. When the traversing stage is to be set in motion, an apparatus, consisting of two levers, a connecting-rod, and a clutch, is brought into play; by the movement of the first lever either to the right hand or to the left, according to the direction in which it is required to be moved. When out of gear, the first lever remains in a vertical position'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print takes us back in time to the heart of Hyde Park in 1850, where the Great Exhibition Building, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, was under construction. The image showcases the Circular Cutting Machine, a marvel of Victorian technology, in action. The machine, placed on a traversing stage, is used to plane the timbers for the building. The timbers are placed on top of the stage, which moves in either direction by a rack and pinion system. The operation of the machine is initiated by a complex apparatus consisting of levers and a clutch. When not in use, the first lever remains in a vertical position. This technological innovation was a crucial component of the construction process for the Great Exhibition Building, which opened in 1851 and showcased the works of industry of all nations. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering insights into the occupation and work of the men involved in the construction industry during the 19th century.
