German colonists. (From the outskirts of St. Petersburg), 1862. Creator: A Derzhanovskii

German colonists. (From the outskirts of St. Petersburg), 1862. Sheet 17 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "German colonists. (From the outskirts of St. Petersburg), 1862," is a captivating glimpse into the past, taken from Sheet 17 of the ethnographic album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia." Published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire, this two-volume work was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and aimed to document the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the vast Russian Empire. The image, created by an unknown photographer under the name A Derzhanovskii, is part of Volume 1, which consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting various ethnic groups in their traditional attire. The album also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of each group's population in various cities across the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-1867), a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia, was the mastermind behind this groundbreaking work. The photograph showcases a group of German colonists, likely settlers who had recently arrived in the outskirts of St. Petersburg. The image offers a fascinating insight into the daily lives of these early immigrants, providing a glimpse into their clothing, customs, and community. The "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" was a testament to the ethnographic and historical knowledge of the 1860s, offering a detailed and accurate record of the diverse peoples that made up the Russian Empire. This photograph, in particular, serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape Russia and its people today.
