EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Geraud Duroc, Duke of Friuli, a prominent figure in French history. Created by Charles Gavard in 1838, the portrait depicts General Geraud Christophe Michel Duroc, the 1st Duc de Frioul and Grand Marechal du Palais during Napoleon's reign. The image captures a moment frozen in time - Duroc dressed elegantly for Napoleon's coronation, adorned with the prestigious Legion d'Honneur decoration. However, behind this regal facade lies a tragic tale. The engraving is based on a painting from around 1805 when Duroc was at the height of his career. Sadly, fate dealt him a cruel hand during the combat of Reichenbach in Germany on May 22nd, 1813. Witnessed by Napoleon himself, Duroc suffered an excruciating death after being struck by a cannonball that pierced his stomach. This event marked not only the end of his life but also highlighted the brutal reality faced by military leaders during this tumultuous period. Gavard's diagraph and pantograph techniques bring out every intricate detail of this historical figure's attire - from his cloak to the feathers adorning his hat. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intensity to the portrait while emphasizing its timeless quality. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a poignant reminder of one man's sacrifice for country and emperor alike. It stands as a testament to General Geraud Christophe Michel Duroc's unwavering loyalty and bravery amidst turbulent times in nineteenth-century France.
