Gas Alarm!, Loos, France, World War I, c1915-c1918. Artist: Realistic Travels Publishers
Gas Alarm!, Loos, France, World War I, c1915-c1918. On 22 April 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans released 168 tons of chlorine gas over a four mile front, in the first gas attack of the war. Initially French and Algerian troops (Zouaves) of the 45th and 78th Divisions were attacked with the gas, inflicting heavy casualties and causing widespread panic, with the survivors abandoning their positions. Although the Allies initially condemned the attack as barbaric, the British used it for the first time at the Battle of Loos later the same year, and by the end of the war both sides had used it extensively. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the haunting reality of the gas attacks during World War I. Titled "Gas Alarm!, Loos, France" it depicts a group of men, most likely soldiers, anxiously waiting in their gas masks. The image was captured by Realistic Travels Publishers and showcases the devastating impact of chemical warfare on the battlefield. The photograph specifically references an infamous event that took place on 22 April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres. The Germans unleashed 168 tons of chlorine gas over a four-mile front, marking the first-ever gas attack in history. French and Algerian troops were caught off guard by this barbaric tactic, resulting in heavy casualties and widespread panic among survivors who abandoned their positions. Despite initially condemning such tactics as savage, both sides eventually resorted to using poison gas extensively throughout the war. This particular image highlights how British forces also employed this deadly weapon at the Battle of Loos later that same year. The black-and-white composition adds to its somber tone while emphasizing the stark contrast between life before and after these horrific events unfolded. Through stereoscopic photography techniques, viewers are transported back to this harrowing period in history where soldiers faced unimaginable dangers within treacherous trenches. As we reflect upon this print from Heritage Images, let us remember those who endured unimaginable suffering during World War I and honor their sacrifices for future generations' peace and freedom.
