Gambetta, c1872. Creator: William Holl
Gambetta, c1872. Portrait of French politician Leon Gambetta (1838-1882), an opponent of the French Second Empire. In 1870 he proclaimed the Third Republic after Napoleon III was captured by the Prussians after the Battle of Sedan. Gambetta himself famously escaped from Paris in a hot air balloon when the city was besieged by the Prussians, rallying support for resistance to the invaders in the provinces. Gambetta did not actually hold office until a brief and unsuccessful period as premier in 1881-1882. From " The Franco-Prussian War: its causes, incidents and consequences", Volume II, by Captain H M Hozier. [William Mackenzie, London, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Leon Gambetta, a prominent French politician during the late 19th century. Created by William Holl in 1872, this portrait showcases Gambetta's strong and determined demeanor. Gambetta played a crucial role in shaping French history as an opponent of the French Second Empire. In 1870, he proclaimed the Third Republic after Napoleon III was captured by Prussians following the Battle of Sedan. During the siege of Paris, Gambetta famously escaped from the city in a hot air balloon to rally support for resistance against the invaders in other provinces. Although he did not hold office until later years, serving briefly as premier from 1881-1882 with limited success, Gambetta's impact on France cannot be understated. His unwavering dedication to his country and his strategic political maneuvers made him a respected statesman. This engraving is sourced from "The Franco-Prussian War: its causes, incidents and consequences" by Captain H. M. Hozier (William Mackenzie, London - 1872). It provides us with an intimate glimpse into one of France's most influential figures during a tumultuous period marked by war and political transformation. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of Gambetta's legacy as a visionary leader who fought tirelessly for his nation's freedom and democracy amidst challenging times.
