EDITORS COMMENTS
This frontispiece, titled "A Frontispiece to the New Red Book," was published on June 13, 1816, and created by the renowned English painter and printmaker, William Heath. The humorous image depicts a gathering of prominent figures of the time, each characteristically holding a sack labeled with their name and the reason for their wealth. At the center, John Bull, a personification of the English common man, expresses his astonishment, asking, "Well you have got it all, Pray what do you all do for it?" The figures around him include Napoleon Bonaparte, who had recently been exiled to Elba, holding a sack labeled "Money for being a Prisoner," and the Prince Regent, who is seen with a sack labeled "Cash I have is for Drinking, Eating, Sleeping & W[hor]eing." The Duke of Wellington, who had recently defeated Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo, is shown with a sack labeled "my money is for beating your Enemies," while the Foreign Secretary, Robert Stewart, holds a sack labeled "and mine for robing your Friends." John McMahon, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, is depicted with a sack labeled "you cannot Mr Bull think much of my Little considering the weight I have on my back," alluding to his heavy responsibilities. Leopold I of Belgium is shown with a sack labeled "Vot I got was for takeing a vife and all the Troubles with her," and Princess Charlotte is depicted with a sack labeled "Mine Mr Bull was for takeing a poor man for a husband to make him rich." Queen Charlotte, the consort of King George III, is shown with a sack labeled "I would not take my Little Mr Bull but the Times are so hard & Strasburg so Dear." This intriguing and witty print offers a glimpse into the political and social climate of the time, providing a humorous commentary on the motivations and sources of wealth among the elite. The print is an excellent example of the satirical and humorous style that was popular during the early 19th century.
