Fifth Avenue Nocturne, c. 1895. Creator: Childe Hassam (American, 1859-1935)
Fifth Avenue Nocturne, c. 1895. Boston native Childe Hassam began painting in an Impressionist style during a three-year stay in Paris, from 1886 to 1889. On settling in New York City in 1889, he became one of Americas leading Impressionists. Among his favorite subjects were scenes observed around his studio on Fifth Avenue. The subdued monotones of this view of Fifth Avenue on a rainy night suggest the influence of American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Whistler also painted " nocturnes" (a word alluding to a type of musical composition) in which forms are poetically suggested rather than clearly defined

Fifth Avenue Nocturne, c. 1895
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating snapshot of late 19th-century New York City captured by American artist Childe Hassam. Known for his Impressionist style, Hassam's three-year stint in Paris greatly influenced his artistic approach upon settling in the bustling metropolis. This particular painting showcases Fifth Avenue on a rainy night, with its subdued monotones evoking the poetic influence of renowned American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Like Whistler's "nocturnes" this piece suggests forms rather than clearly defining them, creating an atmosphere that is both mysterious and enchanting. Hassam was particularly drawn to scenes around his studio on Fifth Avenue, making it one of his favorite subjects to paint. In this work, he skillfully captures the essence of urban life at dusk - the shimmering lights reflecting off wet pavements and hazy figures passing by create a sense of movement and energy. The oil-on-canvas technique employed by Hassam adds depth and texture to the composition, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the scene as if they were strolling along Fifth Avenue themselves. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images offers us a glimpse into America's rich artistic heritage while also reminding us of the timeless beauty found within everyday city life.
