Ferdinand de Lesseps, 19th century French diplomat and entrepreneur, (1900)

Ferdinand de Lesseps, 19th century French diplomat and entrepreneur, (1900). De Lesseps (1805-1894) built the Suez Canal to enable shipping to pass between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea rather than having to sail around the Cape of Good hope, completing the project in 1869. In 1880 he then went on to make the first attempt at building a canal to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. A combination of the difficult terrain, a horrendous mortality rate amongst the workforce from tropical diseases and spiralling costs led to the abandonment the project in 1889 however. A print from The Life and Times of Queen Victoria, by Robert Wilson, Volume IV, Cassell and Company, London, Paris, New York, Melbourne, 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Ferdinand de Lesseps, a prominent 19th-century French diplomat and entrepreneur. The photograph, taken in 1900, showcases de Lesseps' distinguished appearance as he gazes confidently into the distance. De Lesseps is renowned for his remarkable achievements in civil engineering and commerce. His most notable accomplishment was the construction of the Suez Canal, which revolutionized global trade by providing a direct shipping route between the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Completed in 1869 after years of relentless dedication, this monumental project solidified de Lesseps' reputation as an influential figure in international transportation. Driven by ambition and vision, de Lesseps embarked on another ambitious endeavor: building a canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Panama. However, despite his determination, this venture faced insurmountable challenges such as treacherous terrain and rampant tropical diseases that claimed countless lives among the workforce. Spiraling costs eventually led to its abandonment in 1889. In this portrait engraving from "The Life and Times of Queen Victoria" by Robert Wilson (Volume IV), we witness not only de Lesseps' resolute spirit but also gain insight into his significant contributions to society. This image serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as an enterprising individual who shaped global commerce through groundbreaking infrastructure projects.
