The Empress Matilda refusing to release king Stephen, 1141. Artist: J Rogers

The Empress Matilda refusing to release king Stephen, 1141. Flight of Matilda from Oxford, 1142. Stephen (1096-1154), the last Norman King of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154. He supported the claim to the throne of Matilda (1102-1167), the daughter of Henry I, before usurping her when Henry died in 1135 and claiming the throne for himself. England descended into a period of civil war. Stephen was captured after he was defeated by Matildas army at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141 but was freed in an exchange for the captive Robert, Earl of Gloucester, Matildas most able lieutenant. Matildas time on the throne was brief, as a rebellion forced her to flee London. Stephen regained the throne and Matilda was besieged in Oxford, but escaped to Wallingford, camouflaged against the snow by wearing a white cloak. The conflict dragged on until 1148 when Matilda returned to France after the Earl of Gloucester died. Eventually, in 1154, her son was crowned king as Henry II after Stephen died

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Empress Matilda refusing to release King Stephen, 1141. Artist: J Rogers This print captures a pivotal moment in English history, depicting the intense power struggle between two formidable figures - The Empress Matilda and King Stephen. Painted by J Rogers, this artwork portrays the tension and determination of both individuals during a tumultuous period known as The Anarchy. In 1141, after defeating King Stephen's army at the Battle of Lincoln, Matilda captured him and refused to release him until her loyal lieutenant Robert, Earl of Gloucester was freed in exchange. This image freezes that decisive moment when Matilda stands firm in her resolve while Stephen awaits his fate. The conflict between these two rivals plunged England into chaos as civil war erupted across the land. Despite briefly occupying the throne herself, rebellion forced Matilda to flee London. Her escape from Oxford is particularly noteworthy; disguised against the snowy backdrop with a white cloak, she managed to elude capture and seek refuge in Wallingford. The struggle continued for years until 1154 when Henry II, Matilda's son with Geoffrey Plantagenet, ascended to power upon Stephen's death. Though her time on the throne may have been brief and fraught with challenges, Matilda left an indelible mark on English history. J Rogers' masterful brushstrokes bring this historical event back to life through intricate details and vivid colors. A true testament to resilience and determination amidst political turmoil.
