The Dowry, 1863. Artist: John Tenniel

The Dowry, 1863. Mr. Bull. There, Pam! Theres The Trifle Of Money For The Marriage. Ah! How Much Better Than Some United States, Eh? John Bull hands over the first years allowance from the brimming coffers of public funds. The Prince of Wales was shortly due to marry the beautiful Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Therefore, in accordance with Palmerstons proposal, it was agreed that an allowance of £ 100, 000 per annum should be made to the Prince of Wales. As £ 60, 000 was already received from the Duchy of Cornwall, only £ 40, 000 of this had to be found. A further £ 10, 000 was voted for the personal use of the Princess of Wales, making a total Dowry of £ 50, 000 per annum. The united state of marriage is compared very favourably to the United States of America, still at this time deep in the throes of the Civil War. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 28, 1863

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in British history, showcasing the political satire of artist John Tenniel. Titled "The Dowry, 1863" the image depicts Mr. Bull, representing Britain, presenting a trifle of money to his daughter Pam for her marriage. The occasion is none other than the impending union between Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. In accordance with Prime Minister Palmerston's proposal, an annual allowance of £100,000 was agreed upon for the Prince of Wales. However, since £60,000 had already been received from the Duchy of Cornwall, only £40,000 needed to be found elsewhere. Additionally, a further £10,000 was allocated for Princess Alexandra's personal use. Interestingly enough, this cartoon compares the united state of marriage favorably to that of the United States during its Civil War turmoil at that time. It highlights how Britain's financial stability allows them to provide such generous dowries while America struggles internally. Tenniel's engraving skillfully portrays this political commentary through intricate details like locked chests filled with money bags and various characters surrounding Mr. Bull as he hands over funds from public coffers. As we delve into this historical artifact from Punch magazine in February 1863, it serves as a reminder not only of past politics but also showcases Tenniel's talent in capturing societal nuances through his satirical artistry.
