Diptych with the Passion of Christ, c. 1400. Creator: Unknown

Diptych with the Passion of Christ, c. 1400. This diptych, or two-panel painting, is hinged at the center so that it could be opened and closed and easily transported. It was clearly designed as an object for private devotion. The owner would have been able to contemplate the Passion of Christ and pray before these scenes. The top two images depict Christs scourging at the pillar and the crowning of thorns, while the lower two show Jesus before Pontius Pilate and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The scenes would have been read clockwise beginning with the lower right. On the back of these panels are remnants of paintings that have since been scraped off

EDITORS COMMENTS
This diptych, created around 1400 by an unknown artist, is a remarkable piece of religious art. The painting consists of two panels hinged at the center, allowing for easy transportation and private devotion. It was specifically designed to be a personal object of contemplation and prayer. The top two images portray Christ's agonizing scourging at the pillar and his painful crowning with thorns. These scenes evoke a deep sense of empathy for Jesus' suffering. The lower two panels depict pivotal moments in the Passion narrative: Jesus standing before Pontius Pilate, facing judgment, and praying fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane. To fully appreciate this diptych, one would read the scenes clockwise starting from the lower right corner. Each image invites reflection on different aspects of Christ's sacrifice and serves as a visual aid for meditation. Interestingly, when examining the backside of these panels, remnants of scraped-off paintings can still be seen—a testament to their rich history and previous artistic transformations. Now housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exquisite artwork showcases exceptional craftsmanship using tempera and gold on oak wood. Its origin lies in Austria during the 15th century Styria region. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured this print—allowing us to admire its intricate details while contemplating upon Christ's profound journey through passion and sacrifice.
