Derbinsky Settlement in the Tym River Valley in the Interior of the Island, 1880-1899. Creator: Innokenty Ignatievich Pavlovsky
Derbinsky Settlement in the Tym River Valley in the Interior of the Island, 1880-1899. From an album created on Sakhalin Island in the 1890s. Sakhalin was used by imperial Russia as a penal colony and place of exile for criminals and political prisoners. Between 1869 and 1906, more than 30, 000 inmates and exiles endured the harsh conditions of the forced-labor colony on the island. The album contains photographs that provide rare glimpses of Sakhalin's settlements and prisons and the prisoners, exiles, and guards who inhabited the island. Anton Chekhov, the Russian writer and medical doctor, spent three months on Sakhalin in 1890, where he extensively researched the plight of the prisoners and the native population. The publication of his Sakhalin Island in 1895 highlighted the depravity of the situation in this remote corner of Russia and led to public protests that helped bring about the closure of the penal colony. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by Innokenty Ignatievich Pavlovsky between 1880 and 1899, depicts the Derbinsky Settlement in the Tym River Valley on Sakhalin Island. During this period, Sakhalin served as a penal colony and place of exile for criminals and political prisoners under the imperial Russian regime. The image offers a haunting glimpse into the lives of those who endured the harsh conditions of this remote outpost. Situated in the interior of the island, Derbinsky Settlement was one of many settlements established to house the growing population of inmates and exiles. The photograph reveals a desolate landscape, with simple wooden structures huddled together against the backdrop of a barren, rocky terrain. The Tym River, meandering through the valley, adds a sense of isolation to the scene. The presence of Sakhalin as a penal colony began in 1869 and continued until 1906, during which time more than 30,000 inmates and exiles suffered through the unforgiving climate and labor demands. The living conditions were deplorable, with inadequate food, clothing, and shelter, leading to widespread disease and suffering. Notable figures like Anton Chekhov, the renowned Russian writer and medical doctor, visited Sakhalin in 1890 to investigate the plight of the prisoners and the native population. Chekhov's account of his experiences, published as "Sakhalin Island" in 1895, brought international attention to the inhumane conditions and sparked public protests that ultimately led to the closure of the penal colony. This photograph, taken from an album created during the late 1890s, serves as a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in Sakhalin's history and the resilience of those who lived through it.
