The Debarkation, 1844. Creator: Unknown
The Debarkation, 1844. The French king Louis Philippe arrives at Portsmouth: The royal and distinguished party moved towards the gangway in order to descend to the boat which was to convey them on shore; and here a friendly contest prevailed for a moment between the King of the French and Prince Albert, as to which should have the pleasure of giving precedence to the other. The Prince, however, was persevering enough to gain his point, and so the King was the first to descend the gangway, followed by Prince Albert, the Duke de Montpensier, and the Duke of Wellington. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

The Debarkation, 1844 - A Royal Contest of Courtesy
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1844, we witness a momentous occasion as the French king Louis Philippe arrives at Portsmouth. The scene is filled with anticipation and excitement as the royal and distinguished party prepares to disembark onto British soil. As the group moves towards the gangway, a friendly contest ensues between King Louis Philippe and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. Both men vie for the honor of giving precedence to the other, showcasing their mutual respect and diplomatic courtesy. However, it is Prince Albert's perseverance that ultimately wins him this privilege. With flags waving proudly in the background, a crowd cheers on this historic encounter between two influential figures from different countries. The Duke de Montpensier and the Duke of Wellington follow closely behind as they descend into rowing boats that will transport them ashore. This engraving captures not only a significant moment in history but also serves as a metaphor for international relations during the 19th century. It symbolizes both cooperation and competition among nations while highlighting Britain's role as host to foreign dignitaries. Preserved within these lines are echoes of an era when newspapers like "Illustrated London News" brought such events to life through detailed illustrations. This particular print stands testament to its timelessness by allowing us to relive an extraordinary royal visit over centuries past. (Photo credit: Unknown / Heritage Images)
