The Crystal Palace at Sydenham - the Egyptian Avenue: Colossal Figures from Aboo Simbel, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The Crystal Palace at Sydenham - the Egyptian Avenue: Colossal Figures from Aboo Simbel, 1854. Replicas of Ancient Egyptian scuptures from the temple of Abu Simbel, on display in South London. All Egyptian sculpture and architecture were noticeable alike for massiveness and grotesqueness. But the massive and the grotesque united are not enough to constitute "the grand." There must be some high...idea and sentiment conveyed by the vast blocks...there must be either exquisite proportion and physical beauty, or exquisite imitation. Neither of these classes of interest is attached to the abnormal and idol-like figures...sixty five feet in height...The originals of the two figures...were cut in the solid rock, and excavated by Rameses the Great...The heads of the figures were modelled by Mr. Joseph Bonomi, from a cast made by him during his ten years investigatory residence in Egypt'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Crystal Palace at Sydenham: Colossal Figures from Aboo Simbel, 1854" is an awe-inspiring photograph that captures the grandeur and historical significance of the Egyptian Avenue at Sydenham, South London. This magnificent display showcases replicas of ancient Egyptian sculptures from the temple of Abu Simbel, transporting visitors to the heart of ancient Egypt. The photograph reveals the colossal figures, standing sixty-five feet in height, which were originally carved into the solid rock and excavated by Rameses the Great during ancient Egyptian times. These figures, with their massive and grotesque forms, were not just impressive for their size, but also for the ideas and sentiments they conveyed. The quote from "Illustrated London News" in 1854, inscribed below the photograph, highlights the importance of the figures going beyond their massiveness and grotesqueness. The quote emphasizes the need for either exquisite proportion and physical beauty or exquisite imitation to constitute the grand. However, these interests are not attached to the abnormal and idol-like figures at Sydenham. Instead, the figures at Sydenham represent a unique blend of history, art, and engineering. The heads of the figures were meticulously modeled by Joseph Bonomi, a renowned sculptor, from a cast he made during his ten-year investigatory residence in Egypt. Bonomi's expertise and dedication to authenticity brought these ancient Egyptian figures to life in South London, providing a glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Egypt for generations to come. Overall, this photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of ancient Egyptian history and the power of art and engineering to bring the past to life in the present. The figures at Sydenham's Egyptian Avenue continue to captivate and inspire visitors, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and mystery of ancient Egypt.
