Crimean Tatars. Mullah, 1862. Creator: Karlis Huns

Crimean Tatars. Mullah, 1862. Sheet 43 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Crimean Tatars. Mullah," is an exquisite image from the ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The work, dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, aimed to document the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the Russian Empire during its one-thousand-year anniversary. The image is the work of Karlis Huns and is taken from sheet 43 of volume 1. This volume consists of 62 colored illustrations, each depicting an ethnic group in their traditional attire. The photograph shows a Crimean Tatar mullah, or religious leader, dressed in a long, flowing robe with a distinctive red and white striped headdress. The mullah's facial features, with his piercing gaze and intricately patterned beard, convey a sense of wisdom and authority. The ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia was the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. The publication of this work reflected the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s, providing a valuable record of the various ethnic groups that populated the vast Russian Empire. Volume 1 of the work also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text and consists of detailed essays about the ethnic groups, their history, culture, language, and more. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Crimean Tatars and the broader Russian Empire during a time of great exploration and documentation. It invites us to reflect on the diverse and complex history of these peoples and the world they inhabited.
