EDITORS COMMENTS
Class 4. No. 49: Prince Albert's Hereford Ox - A Triumph of British Agriculture, 1850 This engraving, created by Smyth for the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the grand moment at the Smithfield Club's Annual Exhibition when Prince Albert's Hereford Ox, a three-year-old beast of impressive stature, claimed the first prize of £20 in Class 4 for oxen or steers of any breed and age, weighing between 80 and 95 stones. Bred by Mr. Thomas Sheriff of Buckton, near Ludlow, this short, square Hereford ox was a testament to the dedication and expertise of British farmers. Prince Albert, who was known for his keen interest in agriculture, personally oversaw its feeding regimen, which consisted of cake, meal, hay, and roots. The animal's impressive horns, a hallmark of the Hereford breed, are prominently displayed in the image. The ox's victory was a source of great pride for the agricultural community, symbolizing the success of British farming practices and the role of the royal family in supporting and promoting agricultural advancements. The engraving, which also features Mr. Tucker's Devon Ox winning the £30 prize and silver medal in Class 1, offers a glimpse into the agricultural shows of the Victorian era, where farmers and breeders showcased their livestock and competed for prestigious awards. This image, a product of the illustrated press, serves as a reminder of the rich agricultural heritage of Britain and the pivotal role that such exhibitions played in shaping its farming industry.
