EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent Church of St Mary Woolnoth in the heart of the City of London, circa 1910. Designed by the renowned architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, this Anglican church stands proudly on the corner of Lombard Street and King William Street. The image showcases its stunning architecture against a backdrop of bustling traffic and horse-drawn vehicles. Built as part of the New Churches in London and Westminster Act 1710, which aimed to provide more places for worship in rapidly expanding urban areas, St Mary Woolnoth is one of several churches designed by Hawksmoor that later became known as Queen Anne Churches. Its grandeur reflects both his skillful craftsmanship and the religious significance it holds within British society. The monochrome palette adds a timeless quality to this snapshot from over a century ago, transporting us back to an era when horse-drawn buses traversed these historic streets. It serves as a reminder not only of our architectural heritage but also how transportation has evolved throughout time. This remarkable print offers viewers a glimpse into London's rich history, where faith intersects with daily life amidst bustling city streets. It encapsulates both the spiritual importance embodied by St Mary Woolnoth and its integration into everyday existence within Britain's capital city.
