Charles the Second Knighting the Loin of Beef, drawn by Gilbert, 1854. Creator: Gilbert
Charles the Second Knighting the Loin of Beef, drawn by Gilbert, 1854. The Second Charles of England Rode forth one Christmas tide, To hunt a gallant stag of ten, Of Chingford woods the pride. The wind blew keen, the snow full fast, And made for earth a pall, As tired steeds and wearied men Returned to Friday Hall. The blazing logs, piled on the dogs, Were pleasant to behold! And grateful was the steaming feast To hungry men and cold. With right good-will all took their fill, And soon each found relief; Whilst Charles his royal trencher piled From one huge loin of beef. Quoth Charles, "Odd's fish! a noble dish, Aye, noble made by me! By kingly right, I dub thee knight - Sir Loin henceforward be!" And never was a royal jest Received with such "acclaim;" And never knight than good Sir Loin More worthy of the name'. A popular belief was that a king of England knighted the loin of beef as "Sir loin". From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles II, the Merry Monarch, is depicted in this enchanting illustration by the renowned British artist, Gilbert, from 1854. The scene captures a jovial moment during the Christmas festivities of the royal court. After a long day of hunting in the Chingford woods, the weary king and his men returned to Friday Hall, seeking warmth and sustenance. The fire blazed merrily in the hearth, and the aroma of the hearty feast filled the air. Charles II, known for his love of good food and merrymaking, gazes approvingly at the magnificent loin of beef that has been prepared for the banquet. With a twinkle in his eye and a playful grin, the king raises his hand, bestowing a royal knighthood upon the dish. "Sir Loin, henceforth be!" he proclaimed, much to the amusement and delight of his courtiers. This popular legend, immortalized in the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1854, has captured the imagination of generations. It serves as a reminder of the merriment and joy that the Christmas season brings, as well as the enduring tradition of fine dining and royal pageantry in English history.
