Cattle Mustering in Australia, 1850. Creator: Smyth
Cattle Mustering in Australia, 1850. Drovers and cattle at a waterhole. The object of a Cattle Muster is, as its name denotes, the collecting together of all the cattle belonging to the settler upon whose run, or grazing territory, it takes place; and this, in order either to brand the calves or to draft out some particular description of cattle-bullocks for the knife, perhaps, or young heifers to be sent to the heifer station...Bulls are seldom at all savage, or even wild, and, in company with the latest dropped calves, bring up the rear of the mob. In fact, it often requires a vigorous application of the stock-whip to induce them to go to the camp at all...The noise of a couple of thousand head of bush cattle, trumpeting forth a salute to each fresh mob that appears, blended with the cracks of the sonorous stock-whip, the yelping of curs, and the hooting and hallooing of stockmen, is tremendous'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Cattle Mustering in Australia, 1850: A Scene of Grazing Territory and Collective Gathering This evocative image, captured by the skilled lens of Smyth in 1850, presents a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of cattle mustering in colonial Australia. The scene unfolds at a waterhole, where a diverse group of settlers and their livestock have gathered. The objective of this muster is to bring together all the cattle belonging to a settler on their run or grazing territory. The purpose of this gathering could be for branding calves or drafting out specific cattle for slaughter or transportation. The image showcases a mix of individuals, from the stoic and focused drovers to the curious and restless cattle. The bulls, often the least savage of the herd, bring up the rear, requiring the use of a stockwhip to encourage them to join the group. The cacophony of sounds in this scene is remarkable - the trumpeting of thousands of bush cattle, the cracks of the stockwhip, the yelping of curs, and the hooting and hallooing of the stockmen create a symphony unique to the Australian outback. The muster was an essential aspect of life on the vast Australian ranches, and the image captures the raw energy, determination, and camaraderie of those involved in this vital process. The scene is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the early settlers and their livestock, as they navigated the challenges of life in the Australian bush.
