Castle of St. Angelo - Rome, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Castle of St. Angelo - Rome, 1850. The Mausoleum of Hadrian, now the Castle of St. Angelo, was erected...by the Emperor Hadrian, as a depositary for his own ashes and those of succeeding Emperors...The main body of the structure, converted into a fortress in the middle ages...consists of a strong circular edifice, raised upon a square basement...On the top of the circular building there has been raised a modern square edifice, which serves as the dwelling-house of the Governor of the Castle; and on the summit of all stands a bronze statue of the Archangel Saint Michael...It is a place of great strength, however, and the rooms in the basement are used as dungeons for State prisoners. The Bridge of St. Angelo, which leads from the left to the right bank of the Tiber towards St. Peter's, is exactly opposite the fortress...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Castle of St. Angelo, Rome, 1850: A Glimpse into Ancient History The Castle of St. Angelo, a historic landmark in Rome, stands proudly on the right bank of the Tiber River, its imposing presence a testament to the rich history of ancient Rome. This photograph, taken in 1850, captures the majesty and mystery of the Castle, which was once the Mausoleum of Hadrian. The Mausoleum, now the Castle of St. Angelo, was erected by Emperor Hadrian in AD 139 as a depository for his own ashes and those of succeeding emperors. The main body of the structure, which can be seen in this image, consists of a strong circular edifice, raised upon a square basement. The circular building, converted into a fortress in the Middle Ages, is a place of great strength, and the rooms in the basement are used as dungeons for state prisoners. On the top of the circular building, a modern square edifice serves as the dwelling-house of the Governor of the Castle. And on the summit of all stands a bronze statue of the Archangel Saint Michael, guarding the city and the river. The Bridge of St. Angelo, which leads from the left to the right bank of the Tiber towards St. Peter's, is exactly opposite the fortress. Known as Ponte Sant'Angelo or Ponte Sant'Angelo in Italian, this ancient bridge, also depicted in the photograph, is a marvel of engineering, built by Hadrian in AD 134 and named Pons Aelius in his honor. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the architectural wonders and historical significance of the Castle of St. Angelo and the Bridge of St. Angelo, which continue to captivate visitors to Rome today.
