EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Castel Sant Angelo in Rome, Italy, as it stood in 1927. The artist behind this remarkable piece is Eugen Poppel. Originally constructed by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century as a mausoleum for himself and his family, this cylindrical building was known as the Mole of Hadrian. Over time, it transformed into a fortress during the 5th century and earned its current name, Castel Sant Angelo. The photograph showcases not only the impressive architecture of the castle but also highlights its strategic location on the banks of the River Tiber. The Ponte Sant Angelo, or Aelian Bridge as it was called during Hadrian's reign, connects to this iconic structure. This image transports us back to ancient Rome and allows us to appreciate both its historical significance and architectural grandeur. Eugen Poppel's monochrome depiction beautifully captures every intricate detail of this Roman landmark while evoking a sense of nostalgia for an era long gone. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of how history has shaped our world and how structures like Castel Sant Angelo continue to stand tall amidst changing times.
